Ethnobiologist and employee of our garden Dr. Marcin Kotowski has become a member of two important commissions of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN): Species Survival Commission, Commission on Environmental, Economic and Social Policy, and Sustainable Use and Livelihoods Specialist Group.

The IUCN is a recognized organization dedicated to the conservation of nature and the sustainable use of natural resources, and has been regarded as an authority in the field since 1948. IUCN's mission is to influence societies to protect nature and ensure equitable use of natural resources. The IUCN SSC is dedicated to building knowledge about the status of and threats to species, developing policies and guidelines, and facilitating conservation planning. The SSC's mission is to conserve biodiversity and ensure equitable use of species. SULi is a joint initiative of SSC and CEESP. It mobilizes global expertise to address the challenges of overexploitation of wild species, supporting robust sustainable use models that meet human needs.

Dr. Kotovsky's previous research has included studies of the ethnobotany of Tajikistan, including the wild relatives of cultivated plants (CWR) present in the region. Working with the National Botanical Garden in Vácrátót, Dr. Kotovsky also analyzed methods of using plants used in traditional pastoralism. In the field of ethnomycology, meanwhile, he conducted research on the documentation of traditionally used species of macrofungi in Mazovia.

Dr. Kotovsky's work aims to understand the age-old relationships that prevail between human populations and the natural elements around them. The broad goal of his research is to discover, document, and analyze these connections, and then implement them to promote further sustainable coexistence between humans and nature.
